About CCAA

Our Vision:

A Canada free of ageism against older persons

About CCAA

What is Ageism? Ageism is a root cause of human rights violations against older people.

1 out of 2 people are greatly affected by ageism globally.

Ageism is destructive to healthy aging and the economy, while also disrupting intergenerational harmony.

It is imperative to protect older people’s human rights.

ILC Canada & partners launched the Canadian Coalition Against Ageism… a social change movement fighting ageism with evidence-based strategies.

These include 3 World Health Organization recommended interventions:

  1. Education across the lifespan
  2. Enhance intergenerational relations
  3. Influencing policy and laws

A United Nations convention on the rights of older people will transform everything from laws to social norms that underlie ageism.

What is Ageism?

Ageism is the way we think (stereotypes), the way we feel (prejudice), and the way we act (discrimination) towards people based on their age.

Shocking statistic

One in every two people around the world are ageist against older people.

What is CCAA?

The CCAA is a national, multi-pronged, social change movement to combat age discrimination against older persons while protecting and strengthening their human rights.

CCAA’s vision

A Canada free of ageism against older persons.

Our History

The CCAA was formally launched in November 2022 to act on recommendations from the WHO report on ageism and to ensure Canada’s role as a world leader in combating ageism against older persons. CCAA has 14 founding Canadian seniors’ organizations with a combined reach of over 10 million Canadians, currently led by the International Longevity Centre Canada.

What CCAA does

CCAA aims to effectively create sustained and scalable transformations in policies, practices, power dynamics, social norms and mindsets that underlie ageism.

CCAA will achieve its goals with three targeted, strategic, evidence-based interventions: 1. education across the lifespan, 2. enhanced intergenerational relations, and 3. influencing policy and laws.

Looking forward

As we start to mobilize champions with creative and innovative ideas on how to take strategic action to combat ageism, let’s start with the basics – education, conversations, and narratives.
